### [Read the passage.](https://biblia.com/bible/esv/John6.41-59)
Jesus saying that He came down from heaven causes consternation among His hearers.
Because they see Him as a mere man, knowing where He came from and who His family is, they do not see or understand His divine identity.
Jesus again explains that they do not see or understand this unless the Father grants it to them, drawing them into belief.
He quotes [Isaiah 54:13](https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Isaiah54.13), which is in the context of the Lord fulfilling His promise of everlasting peace and security to His people.
Jesus asserts that the One who teaches is in fact Himself.
Then, Jesus doubles down on the "bread of life" metaphor, equating Himself to the bread that comes from heaven that grants eternal life.
He even goes so far as to say His blood must be drunk as well to receive eternal life.
This is more controversial than telling His Jewish audience that they'd eat bacon cheeseburgers in heaven, a non-kosher food.
Both cannibalism and drinking blood was forbidden by the Law of Moses, but they couldn't stop thinking of only the literal interpretation of what He was saying.
I find it striking to learn that these things were said in the synagogue at Capernaum.
Most of the time, Jesus is teaching people outside somewhere, away from the towns and cities.
Sometimes we see Him at the temple, but most of the long-form sermons are recorded as being in an open place, or just have no context for the setting.
This time, it was both public and in a place of official theological teaching.
It wasn't like Gnostic mysteries or Mormonism where there are secret things taught to the insiders in addition to what is said publicly.
Jesus laid it all out for everyone to see, even though He knew not everyone would understand or accept it.
