Luke reveals something radical about Jesus's ministry in these few verses: He
|
|||
|
accepted women as disciples. They followed Him, sat under His teaching, and
|
|||
|
helped fund everyone's travels. This was compeletly unheard of at this time. At
|
|||
|
the time, women were definitely treated as second-class people. Rabbis refused
|
|||
|
to teach women, they weren't allowed as valid witnesses in court, and generally
|
|||
|
had fewer rights. Jesus didn't treat them that way though.
|
|||
|
|
|||
|
Some people point to particular parts of the Bible and say it is anti-woman,
|
|||
|
but more than any other ancient book it affirms the positive role of women in
|
|||
|
the world and affords more protections to them if people follow its teachings.
